The Air Force Armament Museum is located near
Eglin Air Force Base's main gate
and is the only facility in the
U.S. dedicated to the display of Air Force armament. Visitors
can view a variety of historical Air Force planes, from a B-17
World War II bomber to an F-4 Phantom II jet.

Directions
The Air Force Armament Museum is
near the entrance of the Eglin Air Force Base's main gate
on Hwy 85, between Shalimar (Fort Walton Beach area) and the Okaloosa
County Regional Airport.
From Fort Walton Beach: Go
North on Eglin Pkwy through Shalimar and take the Hwy 85
exit. The museum is located on the right hand side of the
road, just before the intersection of State Road 189!
Theater
The movie "Arming the Air
Force," a history of Eglin Air Force Base and its role in
the development of armament, is shown in our theater
continuously throughout the day. (32 minutes in length.)
Exhibited Aircraft
There are four aircraft in the
building with each representing a specific war era:
- P-51 Mustang and P-47 - World
War II
- F-80 Shooting Star - Korean
War
- F-105 - Vietnam War
Aircraft on display outside include
the SR-71 Blackbird, A-10, B-17, C-47, B-25, T-33, F-4, F-15,
F-16, F-84, F-86, F-89, F-100, F-101, F-104, F-111, RB-47, RF-4,
O-2, C-131, B-52, B-57.
Exhibited Armament
A wide variety of bombs,
missiles, and rockets are exhibited along with the newest air to
air missile, the AMRAAM, and the GBU-28 bunker buster developed
for use during Desert Storm. Other missiles are the
Paveway series, Falcons, the Tomahawk, Mace, Hound-dog, radar
controlled, laser controlled and several guided by a TV
camera in the nose.
Gun Vault
Weapons range from a simple 1903
Springfield rifle to the GAU-8, which is capable of shooting
6,000 rounds per minute.
Featured is the Sikes antique
pistol collection with over 180 pistols, including flintlock,
dueling pistols, western six-shooters, Civil War pistols, and a wide
variety of early military weapon.
Mural Painting
In the theater is a large mural
painting donated by artist Mickey Harris of Crestview,
Florida. It depicts many important events starting with
World War I aircraft in action, progressing thru World War II,
Korea, Vietnam, and into the "Starwars" concept. Also
painted by Mickey is a large mural in the lobby.
Gift Shop
The gift shop contains a varied
line of gift items that are moderately priced. Proceeds from the
gift shop are used to support the museum. It is operated
by the AFAM Foundation. The gift shop also handles mail
and telephone orders and can be reached by calling 850-651-5253.
Volunteers
The museum staff is supplemented
by volunteers. They serve in all areas of the museum's
activities including the information desk, work in the
restoration department and in administrative capacities.
